Have you ever wondered if there’s something you should do to your pool after it rains? As a pool owner, it’s a definitely a question worth asking. Because after heavy rain, pools undergo a few changes on both a chemical and physical level.
Here are some simple tips to get your pool back on track after the rainy days:
1. Check your water level and drain some water if necessary
2. Clean your pool
After heavy rain with storms you will find a lot of dirt, leaves and other debris in your pool. This often increases the nitrogen and phosphorus levels promoting growth of algae and bacteria. First, skim your pool, then vacuum. You can use an automatic pool cleaner or manually vacuum the pool yourself.
3. Empty the skimmer and pump basket and do a backwash / hose your cartridge
Make sure all the baskets are emptied and the filter is backwashed / your cartridge is cleaned for a perfect circulation and filtration.
4. Get a water test
Rain and storms effect your pool water in many different ways.
pH & Alkalinity - Rain water is acidic and will drop the pH. The alkalinity tries to keep the pH in range and is therefore highly impacted too.
Product: Puraway Alkalinity Increaser
Sanitizer - Rain can often introduce contaminants to your water, and your sanitizer will start fighting them off. Even if you have a chlorinator, you might need to add some chlorine after the rain.
Product: Puraway Shock'n'Boost
Salt - Due to dilution your salt level might drop after heavy rain. If your salt level is low, your chlorinator is producing less chlorine than it is supposed to. As your sanitizer level is likely to be low after the rain anyways, you should keep your salt level up to ensure your chlorinator is working proper.

Stabiliser - Due to dilution your stabiliser level might drop as well. As stabiliser is the sun screen for your chlorine and protects it, you want to make sure, that it is in range.
Product: Puraway Stabiliser
Phosphates - In addition to the rain water itself you'll get a lot of organic material in your pool like leaves and dirt. These will cause phosphates and as phosphates are food for algae, there is a risk your pool turns green.
